Coach Tony Hynes

He has helped develop champions and successful competitors at the regional and national level, including athletes who have competed in major tournaments and professional and invitational super fights.

Tony believes great coaching starts with strong fundamentals, technical instruction, discipline, confidence, and understanding that every student has different goals. Whether someone wants to learn self-defense, get in shape, build confidence, become part of a team, or pursue competition at a high level, his goal is to help each student continue to improve and reach their potential.

COACH David adams

2nd Degree Black Belt — Head Adult Instructor

Coach David Adams is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, accomplished competitor, and Head Adult Instructor at 410 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

His competitive accomplishments include:

* First-Ever PBJJF Pan American Champion
* 5x PBJJF Pan American Champion
* 6x IBJJF Medalist
* 8x Newbreed Champion
* 6x NAGA Champion

David began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey in 2010 with the goal of eventually pursuing MMA. However, his passion for Jiu-Jitsu and competition quickly took over, and MMA was eventually put on the back burner.

Just two years into his journey, David earned his blue belt and was given the opportunity to become an instructor. From that point forward, teaching became an important part of his life. Throughout his coaching career, David has taught Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and self-defense to children, seniors, police officers, correctional officers, military personnel, first responders, and anyone willing to invest in themselves.

After leaving his original academy, David continued his Jiu-Jitsu journey while building an impressive competitive résumé, capturing numerous regional titles and continuing to develop as both a competitor and instructor. He ultimately earned his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Noel Smith.

Today, David continues to compete and serves as Head Adult Instructor at 410 BJJ, where he shares his passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and self-defense with students of all experience levels. His goal is simple: to help anyone with the drive and dedication to learn become more confident, capable, and prepared both on and off the mats.

Coach Bryan campbell

Black Belt — Adult Instructor

Coach Bryan Campbell is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt with more than 20 years of experience in the sport. He began training at 38 years old and has continued his Jiu-Jitsu journey through the years, always finding his way back to the mats even after periods away due to injuries and other challenges.

Bryan spent many years training primarily in the Gi before expanding his focus to No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Over time, he developed a strong interest in leg locks, heel hooks, and various leg-entanglement systems, adding another dimension to his technical knowledge and teaching.

As an instructor, Bryan enjoys sharing his experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, including fundamental BJJ, wrestling techniques, takedowns, and leg-lock systems. His years of experience give him an understanding of both traditional and modern approaches to the sport.

In 2026, Bryan was promoted to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt by Professor Tony Hynes.

Bryan enjoys helping students understand the details behind techniques and showing that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be a lifelong pursuit. Having started his own journey as an adult, he brings a valuable perspective to students of all ages who are beginning or continuing their own path in Jiu-Jitsu.

cOACH KATHY Hynes

Brown Belt — Youth & Head Women's Instructor

Coach Kathy Hynes is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt with 13 years of experience in the sport. She began coaching and working with youth students early in her BJJ journey and has spent more than a decade helping children develop their skills, confidence, discipline, and love for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Kathy has extensive experience coaching youth athletes and spent many years leading and developing a successful kids competition team, helping young grapplers prepare for competition while building strong fundamentals and confidence on the mats.

Kathy’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu background is rooted in the Renzo Gracie / Rickson Gracie lineage, where she trained through purple belt before continuing her journey to brown belt.

At 410 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Kathy coaches extensively in the youth program and serves as the academy’s Head Women’s Instructor. She has become an important role model for the women and girls at 410, helping create an environment where female students of all ages can feel comfortable training, develop confidence, and see what’s possible for them in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Her coaching style emphasizes technical development, encouragement, discipline, and creating an environment where every student feels supported while being challenged to improve.

COACH ALEX Hynes

Purple Belt — Adult & Youth Instructor

Coach Alex Hynes is a 19-year-old Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu purple belt who has been training for over 13 years. Having grown up around the mats from a young age, Alex has developed a deep passion not only for competing, but for helping the next generation of grapplers grow through Jiu-Jitsu.

As a competitor, Alex has earned 16 NAGA championship titles, regularly competes at ADCC events, and has competed on high-level professional and invitational super fight cards. He has also defeated numerous high-level competitors from across the United States and placed at the Maryland State Wrestling Championships.

Outside of competition, Alex is a social media creator known as The Funky Grappler, where he shares Jiu-Jitsu content and helps introduce the sport to a wider audience.

Despite his accomplishments, Alex believes some of his most meaningful work happens with the kids on the mats. As a kids coach at 410 BJJ, his goal is to create a positive environment where students can build confidence, discipline, respect, athletic ability, and a genuine love for Jiu-Jitsu.

Alex understands what it feels like to be the young kid starting out on the mats, and he wants to be the coach who helps students enjoy the journey, work through challenges, and become better both on and off the mat.

Coach Anna Johnson

Purple Belt — Youth Instructor

Anna Johnson is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu purple belt and coach at 410 BJJ. At just 18 years old, Anna has dedicated much of her life to training, competing, and helping others grow through Jiu-Jitsu.

Originally from North Carolina, Anna began her Jiu-Jitsu journey training at a Royce Gracie-affiliated school, where she also had opportunities to learn directly from Royce Gracie during his visits, before moving to Maryland and continuing her development at 410 BJJ. Her experience as both a competitor and student gives her a unique perspective on the challenges that come with learning and competing in Jiu-Jitsu.

Throughout her competitive career, Anna has earned multiple accomplishments, including three-time Fight to Win Champion, Philly Phenoms Champion, IBJJF medalist, ADCC Open third-place finisher, and Jiu-Jitsu World League Gold Medalist. She has also earned significant wins over highly accomplished competitors, including ADCC and IBJJF World Champions, both locally and on the national competition scene.

While competition has played a major role in Anna’s journey, she believes Jiu-Jitsu is about much more than winning matches. She enjoys helping students build confidence, learn practical skills, and become more comfortable pushing themselves outside of their comfort zones.

Anna especially hopes to encourage more women and girls to find their place in Jiu-Jitsu. She understands that stepping onto the mats for the first time can feel intimidating, and she strives to create an environment where students feel supported, respected, and confident as they learn.

Her goal as a coach is simple: to help every student become a little better, stronger, and more confident than they were when they walked through the door.

The best way to meet the team is on the mats.
